Miami Dade College (MDC) announced earlier in the year that they have partnered with local employers to offer Registered Apprenticeship and Pre-Apprenticeship Programs that blend classroom instruction with paid on-the-job training. According to the press release, the programs provide apprentices with free tuition, health insurance, books, and tools.

The newly registered programs available include building automation with Johnsons Controls, Inc. and Siemens Industry, Inc. and construction (carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing) with Palmetto Homes Urban Development Group.

MDC is the first academic institution in Florida to receive the designation of Program Sponsor by the Florida Department of Education and named Apprenticeship Ambassador by the US Department of Labor.

MDC offers 15 occupations and has the highest number of Registered Apprenticeship Programs of any other educational institution in Florida. These programs enable employers to develop and apply industry standards to training programs for registered apprentices that can increase productivity and improve workforce quality. The industry accepts apprentices who complete a registered apprenticeship program as Masters.

“As a program sponsor of apprenticeships, we are so excited to collaborate with local employers and other community partners to bring this unique employment opportunity to our students and the community at large,” said Dr. Alexia Q. Rolle, dean of Career and Technical Education and chair of the Apprenticeship Program at MDC. “These apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeship programs the College offers are key to creating jobs, employing South Florida, and fueling the economy.”

In 2022, CU Denver announced its first-ever apprenticeship program, housed within the College of Engineering, Design, and Computing (CEDC) to simultaneously benefit students and employers.

According to CU Denver, its apprenticeship program is in the areas of construction project management and user experience design—two in-demand industries in the region. The construction project management apprenticeship is in partnership with CU Denver’s Facilities Management team.

The user experience designer apprenticeship is with the CEDC’s Inworks, an innovative and collaborative community of learners. The programs are open to all students working toward a CEDC bachelor’s degree, regardless of their GPA, as long as they’ve taken base-level classes.
