More than 200 student researchers from twenty-three California State University (CSU) campuses competed in the 2023 CSU Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB). This year, Anthony Perez from California State University, Sacramento won the Don Eden Graduate Student Research Award at the annual event.
According to CSU, Professor Don Eden received the CSUPERB Faculty Research Award in 1998. He is described as “a tireless participant” in CSUPERB governance until he died in 2000. Eden’s research was in biophysics and physical biochemistry. The 35th Annual CSU Biotechnology Symposium was held Friday – Saturday, January 13-14, 2023.
The award is designed to promote scientific communication to general audiences, celebrate the work of graduate student researchers, and highlight the pioneering work of collaborative faculty-student research groups. The award also fosters excellence in graduate student research in biotechnology, covering topics in cellular, molecular, chemical, and physical studies of the life sciences.
California State University, Sacramento news said Perez’s research focuses on a strategy for using glycomimetics — molecules similar to carbohydrates that combat viral pathogens such as those that cause COVID-19 and AIDS. The streamlined process he presented could be used to expedite the development of drugs to block the transmission of such viruses.
A second-year medical physics master’s student at San Diego State University was honored with the Crellin Pauling Student Teaching Award, named after a San Francisco State University professor and co-founder of the California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB).
Pauling was a professor at the University of California, Riverside, and San Francisco State University. His focus was on microbiology and genetics and most of his research was in DNA repair and replication.
This year’s recipient of the Don Eden Graduate Student Research Award at the annual CSUPERB symposium is Chemistry student Anthony Perez.
