A landmark survey called “Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-Year-Olds” revealed that with technology allowing nearly 24-hour media access, the amount of time young people spend with entertainment media has risen dramatically, especially among minority youth.

According to the study released by the Kaiser Family Foundation, since young people often use two or more media at the same time, they are exposed to more than 10 and a half hours (10:45) of media content during that time.

It is worth noting that this study does not include time spent using the computer for school work, texting, or talking on a cell phone.

The gaming industry provides numerous college and career opportunities, making video games a comprehensive approach to promoting youth well-being.

According to one Independent Game Developers Association (IGDA) survey, 68% of the video game industry’s employees are white, Caucasian, or European.

On the other hand, African Americans, Latinx, Pacific Islanders, Indigenous people, and other individuals collectively make up only 13% of the game industry workforce, despite representing six times more game players.

Gamers, take note! The Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) tweeted an invitation to their upcoming live webinar, “Press Start: Connecting Student Gaming Interests to Success in STEM,” scheduled for Thursday, September 7.

This webinar aims to show how students’ interest in gaming can be linked to success in STEM. The presentation offers a fresh perspective on video games, demonstrating how they can be incorporated into STEM learning and how gaming offers a range of benefits, including positive identity development, social-emotional growth, and leadership skills within supportive communities.

Furthermore, AISES partner Medtronic is offering engineering internships to those interested in contributing to global healthcare technology.

These internships aim to solve some of humanity’s most challenging health problems. The deadline to submit applications is October 1.

The available internship positions are in the R&D, software, and Quality engineering groups, and they are paid and full-time, requiring 40 hours per week for 11-12 weeks.
