Dr. Benjamin C. Flores, professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Texas El Paso, yesterday received the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (STEM) during a reception at the White House. President Barack Obama honored educators from across the country at his second "Educate to Innovate" Campaign event for excellence in STEM education.

People NASA Names New Dryden Flight Research Center Director
NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden has named David D. McBride director of the
agency's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. McBride began his career at Dryden as a cooperative education student in
1982, specializing in digital flight control systems analysis. He earned a
bachelor of science degree in eectrical engineering from University of New
Mexico in 1985 and an executive MBA from the University of New Mexico in 1998.

Dr. Alma Aguado, MD, has announced that she will vie for the Governor of Texas’ seat in 2010. Dr. Aguado would be the first Hispanic woman physician to hold the position. “The Hispanic labor force is expected to be more than one-half by the year 2040,” says Dr. Aguado. “In order for Texas’ economy to be sustainable, our youth must regain education and skills. As a state, we must hold them to a higher standard.”

People Pioneering Hispanic Nurse to Head UTEP School of Nursing
Elias Provencio-Vasquez, PhD, the first Hispanic male to earn a doctoral degree
in nursing in the country, has achieved another first. After a national
search, University of Texas at El Paso appointed Provencio-Vasquez as the
dean of the School of Nursing. Nationally, Provencio-Vasquez is the first
Hispanic male to assume such a position. UTEP President Diana Natalicio and
Provost Richard Jarvis announced the appointment on Dec. 7, 2009.
