Dr. Ernest Marquez was officially appointed SACNAS Director of American Indian Affairs & Science Policy in February 2016. Marquez will work to heighten awareness among SACNAS members about the importance of understanding the relevance of science policy to their pursuit of STEM education and careers.
SACNAS is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Chicano/Hispanic and Native American scientists from college students to professionals to attain advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in science.
"Members should be aware that SACNAS has in the past worked well, using policy as part of its structure," he said. "As with all endeavors, SACNAS will encounter challenges and opportunities in the future. We need policies that help guide us, but we also need to change these policies, as needed, to better accommodate our mission and our targeted goals."
Marquez is a microbial biochemist. He has served as a tenured professor, senior scientist in biotech, past president at SACNAS, lieutenant commander in the United States Navy, and administrator at National Institutes of Health (NIH).
