Since its launch in 2014, Immigrant Heritage Month has grown into a nationwide celebration. On May 31st, President Biden declared June National Immigrant Heritage Month, urging Americans to learn about the rich history of our diverse immigrant communities. He encourages everyone to participate in appropriate events and activities that celebrate the values of equity, inclusion, and diversity.
According to the proclamation, President Biden recognizes that immigrants have always played a significant role in America’s growth and development. Many families came to America in search of a better future and made valuable contributions to the country.
Today, immigrants comprise a significant portion of our essential workers, doctors, farmworkers, and military personnel. They also own one in five businesses, create millions of jobs, pay billions in taxes, and strengthen diplomatic ties globally.
President Biden acknowledged the need for comprehensive immigration reform and has proposed a plan that includes a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, temporary status holders, farmworkers, and essential workers.
He has also initiated new pathways for nationals of Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Haiti, and other countries in the region to come to the United States lawfully.
The President highlighted the importance of immigration in American history and encourages everyone to reflect on the strength and spirit of immigrants.
Many Americans have ancestors who overcame incredible odds to build new lives in this promised land and contribute to the fabric of our Nation. This month, we honor our ancestors by working to keep the torch of liberty lit and held high.
According to a blog on Remitly, about 13% of the U.S. population is of immigrant origin. Economically, this 13% immigrant segment actually added $2 trillion to the U.S. GDP in 2016 and $458.7 billion to state, local, and federal taxes in 2018.
