Elizabeth and Andrew Ghartey, twins from BASIS Mesa charter school in Mesa, have been admitted to the W.A. Franke Honors College at University of Arizona for their first year of college. Both are interested in pursuing engineering to prepare for careers in medicine.

Elizabeth has set her sights on studying biomedical engineering, with the goal of becoming a medical researcher or clinician specializing in either genetic blood disorders or women’s health. Meanwhile, Andrew intends to pursue a degree in electrical and computer engineering and specialize in orthopedic medicine.

The Gharteys were particularly impressed with the research opportunities in the College of Engineering and the BIO5 Institute at UArizona. Andrew also received a four-year renewable undergraduate tuition scholarship under the National Scholars Tuition Award program.

Also happening this fall, three computer science students from the University of Texas at Dallas have qualified for the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals in November.

The team, named “Whoosh,” ranked 12th in the ICPC North America Championship. They outscored every other Texas university team and finished alongside teams from the country’s highest-ranked computer science programs, coming in one rank below Harvard University.

ICPC competitions challenge students to design and implement algorithms to solve 10 to 15 increasingly challenging problems within five hours, requiring expertise in problem-solving, advanced algorithms and data structures, mathematics, abstract thinking, and programming languages.
