The goal of the initiative is to collaborate on and solve environmental issues related to water resources. The launch event resulted in the formation of four working groups to discuss water and climate, water quality, sanitation and health, water in agriculture, and water governance.

Binational projects will be pursued this summer, and SDSU’s Division of Research and Innovation will provide partial funding. The initiative will continue with additional meetings or a workshop in the fall.

SDSU Imperial Valley plans to launch a Bachelor of Science in public health in the fall of 2024 to address unmet environmental health needs.

Collaboration between the United States and Mexico for cross-border water management has been ongoing since the 19th century. The 1944 Water Treaty established the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC/CILA) to resolve disputes and regulate policies relating to water storage, power, sanitation, and flooding precautions.

Mexico must deliver an average of 350,000 AF of water annually to the US, and water debts must be repaid during the next five-year cycle.

Recent droughts have left Chihuahuan farmers worried, and the government’s water transfer to the US has resulted in controversy and clashes at the La Boquilla dam.

Despite protests from farmers, Mexico has pledged to honor the water treaty with the United States. However, the treaty needs improvements to address the challenges of climate change and water demands exceeding supply.
