International Literacy Day, observed on September 8, reminds the world of the importance of literacy, as well as the need for intensified efforts towards achieving more literate societies.

The 2025 UNESCO theme centers on “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era” because literacy goes beyond reading and writing — it includes understanding complex information environments and navigating online platforms.

UNESCO highlights that digital literacy cannot develop without a teacher to guide students. They also note that this year, International Literacy Day is being observed in a rapidly changing digital era.

Through a global alliance, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning is fostering digital learning initiatives. The action aims to create literacy ecosystems where no learner or teacher is left behind.

Monday also marks the beginning of National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities shared a social media post on Monday recognizing all 615 Hispanic-serving institutions across the nation.

The College of San Mateo shared a map created by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, illustrating the increasing presence of Hispanic-serving institutions across the nation.

According to the College of San Mateo, Hispanic-serving institutions are part of a larger effort to transform systems and prioritize the needs of communities.

Many Hispanic-serving institutions are using social media to acknowledge their essential contributions and celebrate their essential work in educating learners and their commitment to the social and economic mobility of their students.

The University of St. Francis celebrated the first day of Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week with a social media post highlighting that 20% of all colleges and universities in the U.S. are Hispanic-Serving Institutions, serving two-thirds of all Hispanic college students.

The University of Saint Francis and the University of Mount Saint Vincent, along with colleges and universities nationwide, are raising awareness about the critical role HSIs play in improving access to education, advancing equity, and enhancing student contributions to their communities.

Saint Peter’s University announced on social media that it has been selected for the prestigious VOLARÉ Institute by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

One of only 25 institutions chosen nationwide, Saint Peter’s is proud to advance research, expand STEM opportunities, and promote equity in higher education.

Last week, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities announced that, in partnership with UCLA’s Latino Policy and Politics Institute, it hosted a California Policy Roundtable on September 5 at UCLA.

This roundtable brought together leaders and advocates of Hispanic-Serving Institutions to discuss HACU’s policy agenda for the state, including the establishment of a California HSI designation and workforce development.

Massachusetts college leaders also announced their united opposition to threats aimed at dismantling a vital program that supports Hispanic student success during National HSI Week.
