Dolores Alvarez Castilla founded National Latina Day, and the social media campaign went viral in August 2015 .
This year, in addition to Raina Vale’s article on how one woman’s vision became a nationwide movement, Latinas in Tech celebrated National Latina Day on social media.
The Latino Leadership Institute highlights that Latinas are making a significant contribution to the U.S. economy.
They are starting businesses faster than any other group, driving innovation and job creation, yet face a substantial pay gap, earning only 52 cents for every dollar earned by non-Hispanic men.
This gap equates to nearly $1.2 million in lost wages over a 40-year career. If Latinas were paid equitably, they could contribute an additional $1.6 trillion to the economy annually.
Latino purchasing power exceeds $3.4 trillion, with Latinas influencing household spending decisions.
Nearly 1 in 4 U.S. children is Latino, indicating that future leaders are being nurtured by Latinas today.
The workforce is experiencing rapid generational changes; for the first time, data shows Gen Z workers surpassed Baby Boomers in number in late 2023.
By the second quarter of 2024, Gen Z accounted for 18% of the workforce, while Millennials made up 36% and Baby Boomers 15%.
Recently, AARP conducted a survey comparing perspectives from Cara, a Millennial, and Laurette, a Baby Boomer. Both agreed that inclusivity means considering diverse viewpoints to achieve common goals, thereby improving overall work quality.
In a two-and-a-half-minute video, an interviewer poses questions to interviewees, who respond by holding up “yes” or “no” cards and elaborating on their answers.
The first question focused on a contentious topic regarding office etiquette post-pandemic: Is it acceptable to turn off your camera during a video meeting? This question revealed no generational divide, as both generations acknowledged the challenge of being “camera-ready.”
The next question addressed whether it is appropriate to listen without headphones in a shared workspace. Here, a generational divide emerged: Cara stated that it depends on the situation, while Laurette affirmed that she often listens without headphones.
When discussing visible tattoos in a professional setting, Cara, the Millennial, stated that tattoos should be accepted, especially since she has body art. In contrast, Laurette, the Boomer, noted that tattoos are acceptable only if they are covered up.
When the topic of communication was raised, the question of texting your boss an update highlighted another generational divide.
Laurette felt that texting might be appropriate for personal matters, while Cara believed that texting a boss is generally acceptable.
Both generations agreed on the appropriateness of emailing but differed regarding phone calls. Cara preferred to avoid calling a boss, while Laurette had no issue with it.
Cara also expressed that she refrains from responding to emails in all caps, a practice that both interviewees found intimidating.
The topic of sharing vacation photos during meetings also led to differing opinions. Cara explained that while she wouldn’t present vacation photos to the entire group, she would share them casually with someone sitting next to her if the topic arose before the meeting.
However, both generations agreed that it is acceptable to email a colleague while on vacation if needs arise.
While both found jeans acceptable in the workplace, flip-flops were less well-received.
The use of communal bathrooms was deemed a matter open for discussion.
When asked if they had more in common than they initially thought, both Millennials and Boomers agreed that they did. However, the Millennial admitted to having some concerns at the beginning of the exercise.
🌟 Happy National Latina Day! 🌟 Today, we honor the strength and incredible contributions of Latinas everywhere. From breaking barriers to inspiring the world, Latinas are leading with passion and pride. 💃🏽
