The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) recently shared a news story on social media about a group of teenagers who celebrated the end of a 310-mile kayak journey as they reached the Pacific Ocean.
According to AISES, this journey marked the successful removal of four hydropower dams, which had blocked salmon migration and impacted local tribes’ food and culture.
One of the highlights of the 2025 AISES National Conference taking place in early October will be the presentation of the Professional Awards. This week, AISES announced its award winners, who include pioneering academics who bridge engineering, environmental science, and Indigenous knowledge.
The 2025 AISES National Conference award winners include Jennifer Randell, co-founder and director of the first Indigenous-run aviary facility in the U.S., who received the Indigenous Excellence Award; Dr. Cherie De Vore, assistant professor at the University of Arizona, who was awarded the Most Promising Engineer/Scientist Award; and Professor Franklin Dollar, associate dean at UC Irvine’s School of Physical Sciences, who received the Technical Excellence Award for his extensive contributions to laser science.
Dr. Karina Walters, director of the Tribal Health Research Office at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, was named Professional of the Year for creating the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model; Dr. Kelsea Kanoho Hosoda, an assistant professor and director of the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence at the University of Hawaii’s School of Medicine, is recipient of the Blazing Flame Award for her work supporting underrepresented students in science and medicine; and Robert Turner, senior vice president and general manager of U.S. Financial Services, awarded the Executive Excellence Award for driving innovation in payment systems.
Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) will also host conference events in October. Leading up to the annual meeting, scholarship reviewers will evaluate nearly 1,000 applications, selecting top candidates to receive scholarships at the 2025 GMiS Conference.
Sponsors will be present to award the scholarships, helping students achieve their goals in engineering, science, AI, and technology fields.
