David N. Jones, CEO of Lumena Energy, the energy-as-a-service company specializing in demand response using virtual power plants, was the keynote speaker at Friday’s AI Empowerment Summit.

The event was co-hosted by the professional development organization Career Communications Group and Morgan State University, Maryland’s leading public research institution. It was streamed live on Career Communications Group’s metaverse platform, STEM City USA.

Jones outlined Career Communications Group’s decades-long vision for inclusion in innovation and its impact in his opening address.

He discussed one of the most transformative forces of our time, emphasizing how artificial intelligence (AI) is already reshaping how we live, work, and learn. The summit aims to help more people understand AI and empower them to leverage it effectively.

As someone operating at the intersection of energy, technology, and community empowerment, Jones shared his firsthand experience of AI’s capabilities.

He emphasized that the world is at a critical inflection point, with synthetic intelligence enabling humans to evolve collaboratively and exponentially faster than nature intended.

He stated that artificial intelligence is not just a tool but will shape the next era.

Initially hesitant to embrace the AI movement, Jones expressed caution due to the concern captured in a famous line from The Dark Knight Rises: “One man’s tool is another man’s weapon.”

He explained that creating robust systems with powerful technologies means unleashing possibilities and generating consequences.

His ethical considerations compelled him to reflect on what he was enabling and who might be left behind.

Ultimately, he concluded that avoiding AI does not enhance safety; purposeful engagement does.

To kick off the first seminar, Jones introduced AI Basics, designed to help viewers grasp the fundamentals, including what AI is, how machine learning works, and what knowledge is essential before diving in.

The discussion on implementing AI in organizations brought together participants from industry, government, and small businesses. Tech experts guided the audience in setting goals and managing data, culture, and talent.

The morning session concluded with a focus on education and metaverse learning. Jones highlighted how AI and immersive technology are transforming training and preparation for the workforce.

The final session examined new leadership models, equitable access, and how to reach a larger audience with innovative tools.

Throughout the morning, Jones provided recaps, transitions, and insightful comments that connected various topics.
