Did you know the Earth is losing 10 million hectares of forests yearly—an area larger than Iceland? It is estimated that around one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed April 22 as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009. According to the UN Environment Program, this day recognizes the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity’s home.

It emphasizes the need to protect the planet to enhance people’s livelihoods, combat climate change, and prevent biodiversity collapse.

According to EarthDay.org, the organization collaborates with over 150,000 partners in more than 192 countries to promote positive action.

For 2025, marking the 55th anniversary, Earth Day has announced its focus on supporting the tripling of renewable energy by 2030 under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” which advocates for solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and tidal energy.

Every year, on April 22, International Mother Earth Day, or Earth Day, is celebrated around the globe. It serves as a moment to reflect on the importance of caring for our environment and to tackle significant challenges like climate change.

According to Earth Day.org, over 1 billion people worldwide participate in Earth Day activities, including trash cleanups, writing to elected officials to demand change, holding vigils, organizing marches, and conducting educational events, art competitions, and nature walks.

On February 4, 2025, The Ocean Cleanup announced on social media that they had achieved their largest single catch with Interceptor 007, permanently removing over 19,000 kg (42,000 lbs.) of trash from the environment.

On April 10, The Ocean Cleanup shared how drone and camera programming can help address plastic pollution. According to their website, The Ocean Cleanup develops and scales technologies to remove plastic from the oceans.

Over the past decade, the organization has reported results from its efforts to research, extract, and monitor plastic pollution in oceans and rivers. It provides regular updates on social media about its mission and goals, highlighting activities from rivers and seas worldwide.

As glaciers continue to disappear at an alarming rate due to climate change, the UN General Assembly has declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.

Co-facilitated by the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), this global initiative aims to unite international efforts to protect glaciers, vital freshwater sources for more than 2 billion people.

Glaciers and ice sheets hold about 70 percent of the world’s freshwater, and their rapid loss poses an urgent environmental and humanitarian crisis.

On April 24, 2024, ClearSpace-1 announced that after the successful completion of the mission’s first phase and the detection of space debris objects in the vicinity of the mission’s client object, indicating a collision of the target with untraceable debris, they had pivoted to the next stage.

ClearSpace intends to revolutionize how space missions are conducted.

With engineering teams in Europe and the United States, ClearSpace is creating the technologies that will support various applications, from disposal and in-orbit transport to inspection, assembly, manufacturing, repair, and recycling.

ClearSpace aims to support institutions and commercial operators alike to enhance sustainable space operations and promote a circular economy.
