Google has announced that applications for the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) are now open, with submissions accepted until April 8. Since its launch in 2005, this program has provided students and beginners with valuable real-world experience.
Participants will spend over 12 weeks coding, learning about software development, and earning a competitive stipend under the guidance of experienced mentors.
One of GSoC’s main goals is to connect aspiring developers with the open-source ecosystem.
The program emphasizes mentorship, pairing participants with developers from various open-source organizations.
GSoC has successfully facilitated connections for contributors from 123 countries.
In its inaugural year, the program connected more than 200 contributors from 51 countries, demonstrating a remarkable 10,400% increase in participation over the past two decades.
Over the years, participants have collectively produced more than 43 million lines of code and contributed to the development and sustainability of over 1,000 open-source organizations.
This output not only strengthens the foundation of open-source projects but also showcases the program’s effectiveness in empowering new developers to make contributions.
The application can be found on the Google Summer of Code website. The contributor application period closes on April 8, so please reach out to your mentor organizations as soon as possible.
