A distinguished faculty member at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has recently received national recognition for her dedication to mentoring and supporting students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Dr. Teresa Patricia Feria-Arroyo was honored by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) as the 2025 recipient of the Outstanding Support of Hispanic Issues Award during the AAHHE conference held at the Metropolitan State University of Denver.
Dr. Feria has mentored 103 students, guiding them in presenting research findings, publishing papers, and developing the skills necessary to enter graduate programs or secure jobs in STEM-related fields.
She has also facilitated community engagement and research opportunities, emphasizing the importance of traveling abroad for research or attending conferences within the U.S. as valuable experiences for her students.
As a professor and the director of the UTRGV School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences, Dr. Feria prioritizes helping her students thrive and succeed. Being recognized among her peers through this award highlights her efforts to promote opportunities for all UTRGV students on a national level.
Dr. Feria has established a strong reputation for fostering high-quality learning experiences.
She was a former UTRGV Provost Fellow and Office for Sustainability Fellow, having received the UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award in 2020 and been inducted into the UT System Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 2023.
She was one of only two UTRGV faculty members to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.
Additionally, AAHHE recognized Dr. Feria for initiating a successful program that provides valuable insights, personal stories, and guidance to help both faculty and students succeed through mentorship and community engagement activities.
AAHE has announced that the application deadline for the Graduate Student Fellows Program is March 31, 2025. The fellowship provides support to scholars interested in pursuing careers within administration and policy in postsecondary education.
