Midwestern State University was recently designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), meaning it is an accredited college or university with at least 25% Hispanic or Latino full-time undergraduate students.

Midwestern State is a Texas Tech University Systems member and a contender for a leading spacesuit user interface technologies for students challenge.

Recently, Midwestern State University announced that it is one of ten schools selected to participate in the NASA SUITS challenge this year, joining Ivy League institutions such as Brown and Columbia.

According to the challenge website, NASA Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students (NASA SUITS) is a design challenge in which college students from across the country help design user interface solutions for future spaceflight needs.

The NASA SUITS challenge invites college students nationwide to design user interface solutions for future spaceflight needs.

Each year, various teams create proposals to submit to NASA in hopes of being selected.

When Adrian Robledo, class of 2026, learned about the challenge from his Midwestern State University professor, Dr. Tina Johnson, he quickly assembled a focus group.

Known as Team Selene, the group drafted a 20-page proposal paper but did not expect to advance on their first attempt at the SUITS challenge.

However, to their surprise, NASA chose them to proceed with the design of a user interface and an autonomous navigation system for pressurized rovers.

They will work on this project throughout the spring semester, culminating in a presentation of their work at the Johnson Space Center in Houston this May.

The success of Team Selene is a significant achievement for the students and underscores the potential of Midwestern State University.

Robledo is one of four Hispanic students on the thirteen-member U.S. team, with diverse roots in Mexico, Honduras, and Ecuador, highlighting the Hispanic community’s technological talent.
