The United Nations Biodiversity Summit will take place in Colombia from October 21 to November 1. This event aims to emphasize the importance of climate action and the protection of life to preserve the planet, particularly in one of the most biodiverse nations in the world.
The summit will include the Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16), during which governments will review the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Additionally, the conference will focus on finalizing a mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from using digital sequence information on genetic resources.
The 2022 meeting, hosted by China, resulted in a landmark deal to protect 30% of the world’s land and sea by 2030.
This year’s summit will concentrate on the steps needed to implement the 30 by 30 agreement and how to reform global financial systems to support developing countries in achieving their commitments.
A panel of experts will explore the significance of the biodiversity summit, its impact on communities’ resilience and global stability, and the necessary investments for biodiversity protection.
