C++, Unity3D, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and Flash are some of the programming languages you need to major in video game development. According to appily’s “Best Colleges with Esports in 2024” report, there are several top college destinations for this path.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in the report, appily said that $16 million in esports scholarships and assistance is available for college and university students participating in programs in the U.S.

appily’s best advice for student gamers interested in scholarships is to get involved in esports programs now, specialize, and build their skills. Then, they should participate in tournaments and other events whenever possible.

appily recommends that students take courses in programming, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), testing, and much more.

A video game development major could create opportunities for work with companies like Rockstar Games, Blizzard Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Activision.

In the fall of 2022, Texas A&M University-San Antonio was one of five colleges/universities selected for the Generation Esports’ Learn and Build STEAM (LABS) program.

As winners, A&M University-San Antonio’s Esports Program received gaming computers, keyboards, mice, headsets, and two esports coaching certifications for educators.

A&M University-San Antonio also announced that it would host Generation Esports on campus later in the fall semester to collaborate in building the new gaming PCs.

With support from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), the LABS program supplied 25 esports labs to middle schools, high schools, and colleges across the United States, providing opportunities for their students and educators.

A&M University-San Antonio’s Department of Recreational Sports introduced varsity esports to campus in spring 2020. The Esports Program is designed to promote gaming as a beneficial activity for students in the university community and beyond.

Generation Esports is a nonprofit that builds community through gaming, education, and charity. Since 2012, Generation Esports has grown to more than 200,000 registered users and over 5,000 partner schools, becoming one of the largest gaming platforms.

The organization runs the largest league for high school esports and a rapidly growing middle school and college leagues. Generation Esports also provides scholarships to students.

In 2022, Generation Esports announced the winning schools of the Learn and Build STEAM (LABS) program. With support from AMD, the LABS program supplied 25 esports labs to schools across the United States, providing amazing opportunities for their students and educators.

Winners in the college category included Columbus State University, California Polytechnic State University, Catawba Valley Community College, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and Mesalands Community College. The winning schools received everything they needed to start or level up their scholastic esports club.

Generation Esports helps students learn, connect, and compete through video games, with programs like LABS. More recently, Generation Esports, home of Gaming Concepts and the High School Esports League (HSEL), partnered with the Michigan High School Esports Federation to raise the bar for high school esports education and competition across Michigan.

According to the press release, beyond competitive advancements, the collaboration will expand the implementation of the Gaming Concepts curriculum in schools throughout Michigan.

Integrating students’ passion for esports and gaming with traditional science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and career technical education (CTE), Gaming Concepts has become the best-selling scholastic gaming curriculum in the United States.

The program boosts attendance rates and grade point averages and includes evidence-based “Mental Health Moments” designed to offer students preventative mental health support.

The partnership introduces an innovative competitive feeder system to elevate state champions to the premier league. This initiative allows athletes to secure a spot at the Nationals, creating a structured pathway from state to regional to national competitions.

Top performers can showcase their talents nationally, attract attention from college scouts, and receive increased support from their academic community. Gaming Concepts is the recommended curriculum for schools and provides our state champions with an auto bid into the High School Esports.
