HACU’s CEO discussed the state of higher education for Latinos and HSIs in Washington, D.C.

Antonio R. Flores, president and CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), spoke at the State of Latinos in Washington, D.C.

The discussion was attended by leaders from various Hispanic organizations and aimed to provide insights into the current higher education environment affecting Latinos and Hispanic-serving institutions.

The event was hosted by the Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries. Among others present were the Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Díaz Barragán.

In his presentation, Flores provided an overview of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and the student demographic they serve.

He also discussed the HSI designation, the role of HSIs, and the need for increasing federal support for HSIs at an equitable level.

Furthermore, he shed light on HACU’s perspective, particularly in the context of the recent Supreme Court of the United States decision on Affirmative Action within higher education.

Other participating organizations included the Hispanic Federation, UnidosUS, GreenLatinos, Voto Latino, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders, University of California, Los Angeles Latino Policy and Politics Institute, Mi Familia Vota, and Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
