For the fall of 2023, the University of California has accepted the highest number of California applicants ever. Latinos make up a significant portion of the underrepresented students accepted into the largest class to date. The campuses were able to increase their available spots due to an increase in funding.
The University of California recently announced that it had accepted a record-breaking number of California freshmen to its incoming undergraduate class for fall 2023. The class also includes the highest number of underrepresented students in the system’s history, totaling 88,285 California freshmen.
The admitted freshman undergraduates at the University include the largest number of underrepresented students in the system’s history, with Chicano/Latino students representing the largest underrepresented group at 37.6%.The university has also seen progress in admitting American Indian students, mainly due to its Native American Opportunity Plan, with admitted American Indian students representing 0.7% of the incoming freshman admit class, with admission offers increasing by 11.6% over 2022.
Meanwhile, Asian American admits are at 34.2%, white students comprise 19.1% of the incoming freshman admit class, and African American students make up 5.5% of admits.
According to UC President Michael V. Drake, M.D., “The university’s latest admissions data reflects our commitment to expanding opportunity and ensuring that students from all backgrounds have a chance to attend one of our excellent undergraduate campuses. We’re pleased to support thousands more Californians who wish to pursue higher education, benefitting themselves and communities across the state.”
The number of freshmen admits from underrepresented groups has increased by 4% over 2022 data, with the socioeconomic profile of admitted California freshman undergraduates remaining relatively flat compared to 2022 admissions, with 44% being first-generation college students and 45% of admitted students reporting low family incomes.
This represents an increase of 3.5% (3,017) from the fall 2022 admissions numbers, with the university accepting a total of 157,446 applicants, including 129,685 freshmen and 27,761 transfer students.
These numbers demonstrate a continued interest among undergraduate students in attending a UC campus, as well as their recognition of the benefits of a UC education in supporting their economic mobility, while remaining relatively affordable compared to other institutions. At the university, 55% of California undergraduates pay no tuition to attend.
For the 2023 class, the university admitted 24,729 students from California Community Colleges, with the admission rate increasing to 77.5% this year from 75.7%
