The Research Mentorship and Apprenticeship Program (Research-MAP) is a program for undergraduate students that provides professional development, research presentation experience, and funding for research assistantships. The program helps students connect with a faculty mentor and is open to all majors.
The next Research-MAP application will open in Fall 2023, and all full-time undergraduates at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) are eligible for consideration.
Dalia Vazquez applied to UT Austin to pursue STEM, but when she wasn’t accepted into the biomedical engineering program, she became an undeclared major.
However, she later discovered the Research-MAP program, which allowed her to work alongside a mentor on a research project exploring Latinos and climate change communication in Texas. The program helped her build a network with other scholars of color in the field of geography and gain valuable interdisciplinary experience.
Research-MAP is a collaboration between the UT Student Research Committee and the Office of Undergraduate Research, and it increases access to research for students with financial barriers to participation.
Students in the program receive up to $2,000 in research assistantship funding each semester, and faculty mentors are asked to contribute matching funding when possible.
Dalia’s first few semesters at UT were challenging as a first-generation college student, but she found programs like Mellon Mays and McNair, as well as being a part of her major and her research friends from Research-MAP, which helped her feel more at home at the University.
Students of all majors can apply to Research-MAP, regardless of whether they are already connected with a faculty mentor or need help connecting with one.
The program is aimed at first- or second-year students who are just beginning their engagement with research. Students of color, low-income, or underrepresented students often underestimate themselves in research or academia, but programs like Research-MAP make it easier to navigate the process.
