A group of students from various Texas universities attended the Innovation in Life Sciences Summer Camp in Galveston. The event aimed to equip students with tools to solve healthcare problems in a rapidly evolving environment.
The camp featured sessions on entrepreneurial mindsets, startups, and community solutions, concluding with a hackathon where student teams pitched healthcare solutions. The camp was funded by a Blackstone LaunchPad grant.
Eight Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students participated in the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Innovation in Life Sciences Summer Camp held in Galveston, TX from June 11 – 16, 2023.
The program aimed to bring together students, faculty, and leaders from the health and life sciences industry to offer various learning opportunities, with a focus on entrepreneurship in life sciences. The TAMIU students who attended the camp were Israeli Contreras, Samantha Garza, Samantha Gomez, Fernanda Lomeli, Nereyda Molina, Mayer Olguin, Arleth Rios, and Angela Sanchez.
Molina shared that the camp allowed exploration and development of new entrepreneurial skills while also learning from mentors. The students emphasized how the event encouraged them to use their knowledge and skills to create an idea in life sciences and be part of a dynamic and ever-changing environment.
Olguin also expressed how the camp was a wonderful experience to learn about entrepreneurship and how science can tie into it. He added that the camp gave him experience in creating startups and presenting them to an audience.
Other universities present at the camp included St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M University–San Antonio, Texas Southern University, the University of Texas at Austin, UT- Dallas, UT-El Paso, UT-Rio Grande Valley, and UTMB, with a total of 24 undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students participating in the sessions.
