Dr. Lina Zapata is in charge of an interdisciplinary research team at the Fundacion Valle del Lili Research Center in Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Their goal is to test new, technology-based cognitive assessments that can accurately detect and characterize dementia in this area of Colombia.
Dr. Zapata’s research team has utilized digital tools to analyze the cognitive, clinical, and genetic profiles of Colombian adults with dementia in Valle del Cauca. The population is diverse and includes individuals with indigenous, African Colombian, and European ancestries.
The team is currently studying the whole genome, using risk modeling and pedigree software. The aim is to support early and precise diagnoses of dementia, uncover new genetic mutations of neurodegenerative diseases in this region, and ultimately reduce brain health inequality in Colombia.
Grants and funding for Dr. Zapata’s project have been provided by respected international dementia associations, including the Global Brain Health Institute (USA), the Alzheimer’s Association (USA), the Alzheimer Society (UK), and the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium on Dementia.
This project has many benefits, including the inclusion of an under-studied and under-represented population in international research on dementia. It will help us gain a better understanding of how dementia is clinically presented in Colombia, which may differ from other countries due to cultural and genetic reasons.
Additionally, this research will provide more knowledge about the population’s genetic vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Colombian patients with dementia will also have the opportunity to participate in international clinical trials for future treatment. Overall, this project aims to reduce inequality in the diagnosis and treatment of dementia.
On April 15, Dr. Zapata was awarded the Beyond Leadership Award for Medical Innovation at the “Shaping the Future” summit. Her research project aims to enhance dementia diagnosis and reduce brain health inequality in Colombia.
The Beyond Leadership Awards acknowledge individuals who contribute to Colombia’s future in sustainability, medical innovation, peace and reconciliation, and diversity and inclusion. The event was organized by the MIT Harvard Club of Colombia.
“Through our research, we aim to provide more accurate and culturally relevant diagnosis and treatment for people living with dementia in Colombia while promoting diversity and inclusion in global dementia research,” concluded Zapata.
