According to the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students, Graduate-Professional Student Appreciation Week is celebrated the first week of April each year.
During Graduate and Professional Student Professional Week 2023, the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill’s Digital and Lifelong Learning Center tweeted that the event is designed to show support and appreciation of graduate students’ contributions, impact, and value at their university and beyond.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University featured the work of Sarah Kezar. As a soil and crop science doctoral student, Sarah takes pride in explaining weed science to others. She thinks about how weeds impact crop yields, about weeds as a small component of an ecosystem, and how that affects our daily lives.
“When I explain weed science to others, I always start with a weed is a plant out of place,” she said in the video posted on Twitter. “And when we think about weed science, we think about the different approaches to control this plant out of place and stop it from competing with water, nutrients, and light with the crop.”
Sarah said agriculture is not just about feeding and clothing people and supporting a global system. It is directly related to helping the planet and building a better future through science. Equally important is how we can support the earth.
“How can we be stewards of the land, with animals, and the land we are working with to optimize the system, be efficient?” she added.
Sarah hopes her science can change the world because we are all part of this global system.
It is National Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week, and we want to celebrate some of the stories of our students making an impact!
