Last December, the University of Texas (UT) System and Google hosted several leaders in Texas higher education and workforce development to announce the availability of Google Career Certificates across eight academic institutions.

During the event, UT System Chancellor James B. Milliken; Lisa Gevelber, chief marketing officer, Americas Region Google; and Senator John Cornyn were joined by representatives from the University of Texas System, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Texas State University System, the Texas Business Leadership Council, and Texas 2036, a nonprofit working to ensure the state is the best place to live and work.

“Pairing a bachelor’s degree with a Google certificate leads to graduates who are broadly educated and skilled—a winning combination for students and employers,” said Milliken in a statement. “With the Texas population expected to double by 2050 and Texas projected to have the highest net job growth of any state by 2030, UT institutions are proud to be leading efforts to meet our state’s workforce and industry demands while positioning our graduates for success and professional growth in the modern job market.”

According to UT Permian Basin, thanks to Google’s collaboration with the University of Texas System, thousands of students now have the opportunity to earn a Google certificate while working toward their undergraduate degree.

The online training program equips people with job-ready skills in data analytics, e-commerce, digital marketing, IT Support, automation in python, project management, and user experience (UX) design.

At UT Permian Basin, students who complete the Digital Marketing Analytics course in the College of Business will earn a Data Analytics Google certification. Students who take the Social Stratification course in the College of Arts and Sciences will earn a User Experience (UX) Design Google certification.

Katelynn Winchell, a UT Permian Basin student, was one of the first to complete the course and receive a Google Certificate in Data Analytics.

“It was an incredible honor to be invited to Austin to share my experience not only with the Google creators but also UT System Chancellor James Milliken and Senator John Cornyn,” Winchell told UT Permian Basin. “The experience of taking the Google Analytics course was challenging, but I paced myself well and chipped away at it a little at a time. In the end, it was so worth the outcome.”
