The 2nd annual HSI Battle of the Brains took place March 7-13 in Austin, TX. And the 2022 champion is the University of Central Florida (UCF). According to the competition organizers, the winning team will receive $25,000 in scholarship prizes. The second-place team will earn $15,000 and the third-place team will receive $10,000.
Students at UCF competed against ten other Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). The participating HSI colleges include Lehman College, Fairleigh Dickinson University (second place winner), New Jersey City University, Rutgers University-Newark, St. Edwards University, Texas State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and the University of Houston (third place winner).
Seven students made up a team, and each team had to be at least half female and half Latino. The teams had 24 hours to develop a solution to a challenge that they received at the competition. The teams were also encouraged to incorporate design, policy, business, as well as science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM components) into their business or tech solutions.
Additionally, students participated in tours of companies in Austin, Texas, and attended workshops to grow their skill sets in engaging ways. They also attended panel discussions with professionals in the business and tech industries to enhance their professional development and grow their network base.
