Miami Dade College is one of 30 two- and four-year Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs) and emerging HSIs that make up an alliance that aims to accelerate Latino representation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The alliance is set to receive nearly $10 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of a grant to ensure the inclusion of Hispanics in STEM.
The alliance provides professional development for faculty, staff, and industry to serve Latino students with intentionality through culturally-responsive undergraduate research and work-based experiential learning.
“I am pleased that Miami Dade College was selected to become a member of the alliance,” said Dr. Diego Tibaquira, professor at MDC’s School of Engineering and Technology. “It provides us with the opportunity to significantly impact the number of Hispanics participating in STEM education and the workforce in South Florida.”
The alliance fills an important gap in ongoing broadening participation efforts, with its focus on culturally-responsive experiential learning in an action-oriented and data-driven environment of continuous improvement and collaboration.
“Creating pathways to success for a STEM workforce reflective of the U.S. population is of national importance to ensuring America’s competitiveness in a global research landscape,” said Sylvia Butterfield, acting assistant director for the National Science Foundation’s Education and Human Resources Directorate. “NSF INCLUDES Alliances provide a structure to address this issue and for the STEM enterprise to work collaboratively to achieve inclusive change.”
Through the establishment of the NSF Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (NSF INCLUDES), the NSF seeks to enhance leadership in STEM discoveries and innovations by employing collaborative approaches to address broadening participation challenges in STEM.
