The American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) has announced the theme for its 16th annual conference. The five-day event, which is scheduled to be held virtually in March 2021, will address issues in higher education and concerns affecting Hispanics.
AAHHE’s conference theme, ‘Sembrando Semillas: (Re)imagining the Contours of Latinx/a/o Communities within Higher Education,’ reflects the organization’s continuing mission.
According to the website, Hispanic faculty in tenure-track positions represent about four percent of the total faculty in colleges and universities. In addition, Hispanic college and university presidents represent three percent of all presidents.
“What’s more astonishing, these percentages for both faculty and presidents have not changed over the past ten years,” AAHHE remarks.
Over that last 15 years, AAHHE has created a Latino/a Graduate Fellows Program, which has offered 200 doctoral students the opportunity to attend conferences, where they are introduced to Hispanic professors and administrators and provided guidance, instruction, and mentors.
AAHHE also offers similar opportunities through its Junior Faculty Fellows Program, which has featured over 100 Faculty Fellows at the conference.
