Given the projected demographics of America, the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) readiness of students of color will have direct implications for the nation’s economic growth, national security, and global prosperity. The National Academy of Sciences has announced a National Convocation on the report Minority Serving Institutions: America’s Underutilized Resource for Strengthening the STEM Workforce. The event will be held in Washington DC on Wednesday, February 6th, 2019, from 9:00AM – 4:00 PM.

The report identifies promising strategies to support the long-term success of the millions of students of color in STEM at Minority Serving Institutions and the capacity of these institutions to remain innovative and competitive in a global economy.

The National Academies will convene several stakeholders, including minority-serving institution leaders, researchers, policymakers, government agencies, private foundations, and representatives from industry, to discuss, debate, and explore approaches to implement the report’s recommendations.

Through facilitated discussions, participants will propose cross-sector initiatives to stimulate the necessary actions to promote change and lasting success for MSI students. Join the day of inspiring and informative conversations on Minority Serving Institutions and their role in producing talent to fulfill the needs of the nation’s current and future STEM workforce.

The event is brought to you by the Board on Higher Education and Workforce of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Sponsors are Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, ECMC Foundation, Helmsley Charitable Trust, Wallace Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Check www.nas.edu/MSIstem  for more details!
