Digital Divide continues to widen Homework Gap, Pew research says

Three years ago, a Pew Research Survey found some 5 million households with school-age children do not have high-speed internet service at home. Low-income households – and especially black and Hispanic ones – make up a disproportionate share of that 5 million.

Now, a new  Pew Teen Survey has found many students are not completing homework assignments because they do not have reliable access to a computer or internet connection.

According to the survey, some students have to do homework on their cellphone and most use public wi-fi to do homework because they do not have an internet connection at home.

Of the teens sampled, 355 were White, 129 were Black, and 202 were Hispanic.

The survey featured interviews with 1,058 parents who belong to the NORC AmeriSpeak panel and have a teenager between 13 to 17, as well as interviews with 743 teens. Interviews were conducted online and by telephone from March 7 to April 10, 2018.

NORC or the National Opinion Research Center’s AmeriSpeak is a panel of randomly selected U.S. households with a known, nonzero probability of selection from the NORC National Frame, and then contacted by U.S. mail, telephone and field interviewers.

The 2015 Pew survey found lower-income Hispanic households with children trail comparable white households with children by about 10 percentage points.

Three years on, Pew researchers say nearly one-in-five teens can’t always finish their homework because of the digital divide.
