The Computing Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institutions has emerged as a significant pipeline of new recruits into computing graduate studies. According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), the consortium of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) graduates students at 10 times the national rate of Hispanic baccalaureates in computing.
Formed as part of the NSF’s Broadening Participation in Computing program in 2006, the Computing Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) works to increase the number of Hispanics advancing in computing as students, faculty and computing professionals.
Recently, CAHSI became one of the first 37 projects funded by the inaugural NSF Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (INCLUDES) program.
NSF INCLUDES aims to improve access to STEM education and career paths, making them more widely inclusive to underserved populations.
The CAHSI INCLUDES project builds on a partnership of public and private institutions with an established record in advancing Hispanics in higher education.
CAHSI draws strength from HSIs such as Florida International University, New Mexico State University, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, University of Houston-Downtown, University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, and the University of Texas at El Paso.
INCLUDES investigators are from California State University-Dominguez Hills, Excelencia in Education, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Mentor-Net, New Mexico State University, University of California Merced, and the University of Texas at El Paso.
This fall, CAHSI continued its collaboration with Great Minds in STEM by holding the CAHSI annual summit in a joint event with the HENAAC Conference.
CAHSI’s collaboration is focused on supporting the recruitment, retention, and advancement of Hispanics in computing by strengthening CAHSI’s student and professional networks through our annual networking lunch, hackathon, data analytics, and technical challenge sessions.
