In 2018, Girl Day was again highlighted by a Capitol Hill luncheon briefing open to lawmakers, non-profits, and corporations.

The briefing took place on February 13, 12 pm – 1 pm at the Rayburn House Office Building.

Speakers at the briefing shared messages for encouraging girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and illustrated how even one engineering experience for a girl can make a difference to her future.

Speakers at the briefing included:

Representative Ben Ray Lujan (D- New Mexico), Member, House Energy, and Commerce Committee Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Native American Caucus, Natural Gas Caucus. Founder of the bipartisan Technology Transfer Caucus

· Dr. Michael Smith – DiscoverE Diversity Council Chair, Deputy Executive Director, Internal Operations of The National GEM Consortium

· Sukari Brown– Annual Convention Planning Committee Vice-Chairperson 2017-2018, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

· Shirali Patel– Senior Product Manager, Raytheon

· Kaitlyn Ludlum– Society of Women Engineers (SWE) high school member

This year, in addition to the many local Girl Day activities planned across the United States, schools, engineering clubs, libraries and others are organizing screenings for girls to watch Dream Big, the giant screen film that transforms how we think about engineering as it takes viewers on a journey of discovery.

The Girl Day events, ranging from corporate sponsored programs to grassroots activities, include:

· In Orange County, CA, Women’s Transportation Seminar, a national organization of transportation professionals, is offering 125 middle school and high school girls opportunities to discover career paths in transportation planning and engineering through fun and informative hands-on activities.

· In Cedar Rapids, IA, NewBoCo will host a girls-only coding camp. Girls will learn HTML and CSS to build their own website and about careers in computer science and engineering.

· In St. Louis, the Park College of Engineering is inviting high school girls to visit the university engineering department and visit different labs from each discipline. Students are given an engineering challenge and then attend a networking lunch with professionals and undergrads.

· The Women in Engineering program at UT Austin is holding a half day event for K-8 students on the UT campus. Girls meet students and working engineers for hands-on activities, demonstrations. The event provides a unique opportunity for girls to engage in engineering as well as other STEM topics at their own pace

· Engineering For Kids of Metro Atlanta will host 46 3rd-5th grade girls from Title I schools for an aerospace engineering workshop. Another event at a Maker Station for 12 3rd-5th grade girls for a mechatronic engineering workshop. Girls will meet engineers.
